Remembering on Memorial Day

Lest We Forget!

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must Have stung quite a bit.

The complaint:

'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the

Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Any response would be appreciated.

The response:

Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques.. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr.

USAF

INFLATION CONCERNS

Inflation is an increase in the level of prices of goods and services over a period of time. Mixed inflation signs do not generally bode well for mortgage bonds. Inflation erodes the value of fixed income securities generally causing bond prices to fall and interest rates to rise.

The mortgage bond market received mixed inflation data last week. The producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the producer level, rose a surprising 0.3% in April. This figures was considerably higher than the expected 0.1% increase. However, the core rate, which excludes volatile food and energy, rose 0.1%. This figure was exactly as expected.

The relatively flat core producer price figure helps reinforce the belief that inflation remains in check. However, the higher than expected producer price figure supports the opposite conclusion. Unfortunately the consumer price index data did little to settle the score. Consumer prices were unchanged in April, as expected. However, the core, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3%, higher than the expected 0.1% increase. Higher core inflation readings are usually terrible for fixed income securities such as mortgage bonds. We saw an example of this Friday morning as bond prices fell and interest rates spiked higher erasing some of the recent improvements.

With the mixed data and President Obama recently stating that the US debt load is "unsustainable" the fear of inflation looms. If future data echoes that of the core consumer price data, then it is a real possibility that mortgage interest rates could push higher. However, if future data alleviates some of the recent concerns we could see rates hold steady or even push a little lower. Be aware that floating in this environment is risky. The good news is that mortgage interest rates currently are historically favorable. It is a great time to take advantage of rates at the current levels.

Just When You Thought Tax Season Was OVER!
May 6th, 2009 12:35 PM
Start Prepping Now to Avoid Audit, Cut Taxes and Relieve Stress in 2010

(ARA) – You may feel relieved that tax season is over for another year. But 2010 tax time will arrive before you know it, and a few pro-active steps throughout the rest of 2009 will help you avoid an audit, minimize your tax burden and reduce your stress level next April 15.

With a little planning and the wise use of a trustworthy tax accountant or tax attorney, more Americans could avoid a run-in with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and reduce their tax burden. The key is not waiting until April 15, the nationally recognized deadline, to prepare for doing your taxes or to submit year-end tax returns to the IRS.

Even though the time for submitting your tax return is over, the stress of tax season will linger for millions of Americans who will face an IRS audit in the coming months. If you've never been through an IRS audit, the experience can leave you shaking. That's because the burden of proof is on you to convince the IRS that you reported all your income, and were entitled to all the credits, deductions and exemptions that you claimed in your tax returns. It's no secret that the more complicated your tax returns become, the more likely the chances are that you will receive an unwelcome letter in the mail one day informing you that you are being audited.

What are the big red flags to the IRS? According to FindLaw.com, the world's leading source for online legal information, tax returns that trigger IRS flags are for individuals or households reporting higher incomes, as well as returns for those who own small businesses, especially home-based businesses, are self-employed, or work in professions involving payment in the form of cash and tips, such as a waitress or self-employed construction worker. In addition, those with higher incomes also face a far greater chance of being audited. In both circumstances, tax returns with a large number of deductions may be flagged for an audit.

For more information you can always rely on www.irs.gov!
